Installing Solar Panels On
Composition Shingle Roofing

Did you know that solar energy offers more than just environmental benefits? It’s all about taking charge of our energy future. And guess what? Shingle roofs, which are found in 75% of residential roofs in North America, are the perfect place to start this energy revolution. Let’s explore how we can install solar PV arrays on composition shingle roofs and begin enjoying the benefits of solar energy!

People have always loved shingle roofs for their classic overlapping design, affordability, and the aesthetic appeal and charm they bring to a home. Composition shingles also stand out as the most compatible with solar installation due to several factors, including the easy attachment of solar roof mounts and the longevity of the roofing material itself.

Before installing a solar array, a thorough roof inspection is necessary to ensure that the roof can support the weight of the modules. Structural soundness, optimal module angle and orientation, and maximum energy yield must also be considered.

Because the average rooftop solar installation requires penetrating the roof numerous times, one of EcoFasten’s principles is to design mounts that protect the roof from water intrusion for the life of the solar array. Many of our most popular mounts incorporate our patented Four-Seal Watertight Technology, which seals the penetration at four levels.

That watertight technology started with our GF-1 Flashing way back in the 2000’s. That technology is actively relied on by installers all over the country. And in the past couple of years, the way installers ” slap glass” on comp shingle has morphed a bit. We’re no longer seeing lots of new flashings penetrate (no pun intended) the market; instead, most rooftop racking and mounting manufacturers are launching “flashing-free” solutions that promise speed and ease of installation and use either butyl or mastic in place of traditional metal flashing.

EcoFasten offers solutions that use UltraGrip Technology™. Used on our RockIt Smart Slide and ClickFit Smart Foot for comp shingle roofs, UltragGrip Technology is an integrated, flexible foam flashing that embeds DEEP into the granules on the shingle’s surface – it even embeds itself up and over the steps commonly found on comp shingle roofing, creating a completely watertight seal along the way.

EBoS (Electrical Balance of System) Integration

Solar installation involves several critical factors that significantly impact system effectiveness and durability. Key considerations include the efficiency of modules and maximizing energy production. Mounting systems must be strong and durable to support PV modules and withstand environmental conditions like wind and snow, ensuring safety and longevity.

Electrical accessories are vital for optimizing energy conversion and minimizing maintenance costs. Addressing these factors during installation ensures maximum energy production, system reliability, and return on investment. The electrical balance of system accessories plays a crucial role in maintaining the overall safety and functionality of the solar system.

If you want a successful solar installation, you can rely on our eBoS accessories without hesitation – they’re designed to complement our mounting systems and provide maximum functionality.
